Feeding Birds

I have been busily refilling bird feeders around here. When the harsher weather comes I feel the need to supplement their diet and make it easier for them to sustain life.

I have an assortment of different feeder. Some large and ugly such as this one.

And this one.

I have pretty good variety of diners today. Here you see the Western Goldfinches. I have also been feeding Juncos, Red House Finches and Black Capped Chickadees. All are fun to watch. I am going to build an oriole feeder to attract them to stay around too. Apparently they like jelly and citrus. I can accomodate both.

The chicken ladies even like to come out and see what is going on. They don't love the snow but they do love to be running around. Here they are with a bare patch of grass, grazing. They also like to peck at the paint on my house. Yikes! Might be time to repaint.

  2. I enjoyed seeing your assortment of feeders. Ours have been busy, too. The hens' feet look red and cold; they need little chicken gloves.

  4. My chickens were horrified to see our first snow the other day. I pushed them all out the door as wanted to clean the coop and three of them tried to fly to the fence to avoid stepping in the white stuff. Not being able fliers all three crash landed into the snow a good 15 feet short of the fence. They were SO indignant! Wish I'd had the camera.

  5. I like the little globe like feeders you have. I need to get out and refill our feeders. We've had hawks about lately so I'm kind of hesitating. I don't want to give them free lunches...at least not often!

  6. Yes, feeding the birds is pretty time-consuming (especially when squirrels are "helping out"), but so worth it, Heather! And we agree, sometimes the ugliest feeders really are the best. I'm so pleased to see that our chickens aren't the only ones who hate snow! Rain doesn't faze them, but trying to lure them out onto snow is quite the effort.

  7. The birds look so pretty eating at your feeders while it's snowing. I love this time of year when we can enjoy birdwatching. I hope you'll show the Oriole feeder. I don't think we get them here.

  9. Boy that fog in the background looks awfully familiar, Heather. Brrr. Your birds look so happy and grateful. And your chicken mamas are so fluffy and matronly. Hard to believe they were babies just a few months ago. Stay warm.

  15. Our girls aren't impressed with the snow either. Kim actually carried Ginger and Jelly Bean to our back porch through the snow! Tootsie is braver and will walk in it.
Kim fills our bird feeders. You won't catch me up on a ladder!
